THE MANY FACES OF LONG LEAF PINE

STORY. As shown below, Long Leaf Pine features a variety of appearances.
The photos show Reclaimed and Old Growth Wood. We sort the wood according
to the clients desire for a particular look & feel. We have a very large inventory that
allows us to provide exactly what is desired.

RECLAIMED period wood from the 1870's. Flat sawn which accounts for
over 80% of all reclaimed wood.

OLD GROWTH. Tight rings & Vertical Grain. Very Heavy and Strong. The
most expensive due to being sawn from only two areas of the timbers. To
18 foot lengths are available.

Flooring over 6 inches wide will always have a combination of Vertical, Flat Sawn,
& Rift Sawn Grain Pattern, ON THE SAME BOARD. This pattern & the next two
are fairly standard.

The same as above. This shows a slight variation in Color from the
one above and the one below.

This
flooring board is from closer to the Heart of the Timber. It would be
generally mixed. However, it can be selected out. All of this Flooring
can be up to 18 feet long.

PARQUET FLOORING

These are Tongue & Groove 12 inch Squares made of random width Long Leaf Pine wood strips.

Long Leaf Pine is so strong and stable one can do with it just about anything you desire.

See Photo on Patio Pavers.

This is a FLAT SAWN board. It was originally sawn from the secondary log of the tree.
As you can see it is highly figured. It is used for furniture and Plank Flooring.

This is RIFT SAWN. It is very tight grained. It will have come from the Butt log
of the tree and closer to the outside of the timber.

This is RIFT SAWN. It is very tight grained. It comes from Close to the heart
of the Butt log. Notice it has a slightly darker tint.

From close to the Heart . You see; Flat, Rift, & Vertical Sawn on the
same board.
From a smaller, very dense old growth tree.

From outside part of the timber. You see both Vertical & Flat Sawn
on the same board.
Comes from a large Old Growth Timber.

Though it is Long Leaf Pine, it is known as HEART PINE. It comes from the
center of small timbers. It is the least expensive and the lowest grade.

Example of very LOW GRADE Long Leaf Pine. This is known as HEART PINE
from the center of the timber. Low Cost and Decorative ONLY.

Cut very close to the Heart. We recommend it mostly for CEILING & other DECKING.
Using a thicker cut will make a dramatic looking Plank Floor.

Highly Figured, tight grain. MAKES A BEAUTIFUL LOOKING FLOOR.

These Photos are all NATURAL views. Long Leaf Pine is rarely stained.
To change the Color and Look use; Linseed Oil, Tung Oil, Oil based Urethane,
or Polyurethane. Each of these finishes, together with sanding
techniques will change the woods appearance.

LONG LEAF (HEART) PINE FLOORING

It is hard to see, but is an example of GROOVED Paneling. The grooves really reflect
the woods patina in a most dramatic way.

These pages provide the many examples of the Look & Feel of Long Leaf Pine.
How it is cut, and what part of the Timber the wood came from, determines
in most part, the many different color, and grain variations.

Shown above is a mix of Old Growth and Reclaimed lumber and flooring.
Unless it comes with nail holes it is very hard to tell the difference between
Old Growth and Reclaimed. Unless it comes from a Know & Date Established
Homestead we rarely try to separate the wood.

We are one of only several companies that provide
LONG LEAF PINE WALL-TO-WALL FLOORING just as it
was done in years past.
